Review: TobyMac - The Elements
In the eighteen years since DC Talk announced their hiatus, TobyMac has continually delivered top-quality albums. And this, his seventh studio record, is no different.
The Elements is right on the cutting edge of today’s pop music, making it hard to believe this omni-talented rapper, songwriter and producer is 54 years old. Singles from the project, ‘I just need U’, ‘Scars’ and ‘Everything’, don’t just rival the work of mainstream pop artists, they’re better. Toby carefully crafts sounds, lyrics and beats. And because he cares about pursuing excellence in his music as much as he does excellence in his message, his work deserves a hearing on mainstream as well as Christian radio.
The Elements is the artist’s most personal work to date. It contains a reoccurring theme of persevering through hardships. Some songs reference Toby’s difficult relationship with his 20-year-old son, while ‘Starts with me’ is about America’s racial divide – a subject which has long animated the singer.
Very few artists can produce music that appeals across the generations, but TobyMac can. This is one of his most thoughtful and reflective projects to date.
