CofE welcomes Popes decision to make Archbishop of Westminster a cardinal

The Most Revd Vincent Nichols was one of 19 to be named by Pope Francis yesterday.

The Archbishop of Canterbury has publicly congratulated the Archbishop of Westminster on the announcement he's to be made a cardinal.

The Most Revd Vincent Nichols is just one of two Europeans, who aren't senior Vatican officials to be named a cardinal by the Pope.

Sixteen of the appointees are younger than 80, meaning they are eligible to elect the next pope.

Peter Williams from Catholic Voices told Premier's News Hour why he thinks it's such a significant appointment:
