The new business model of the Vatican's communication department will be based on the same model as the Walt Disney Company and include longer office hours.
In an interview with America magazine, Msgr Dario Edoardo Viganò, the head of the new Secretariat for Communication, said that it was time for the Vatican to enter the modern era.
He said that the modernisation of the Vatican's communication system was happening "very late in the day", admitting that the need for a new approach to communications was identified in the 1990s but hadn't been addressed until now.
Most of the Vatican's press communication is done through Vatican Press Office, Vatican Radio and Vatican Television Centre.
Msgr Viganò wants to reorganise the communication outlets, retraining over 650 employees in new roles.
But he admitted that not everyone is excited about the changes.
"Not everyone is enthusiastic. There is some anxiety regarding the changes, and there is some resistance, too," Msgr Viganò said, "despite having spent hundreds of hours in meetings trying to explain what is happening."
Mgr Viganò added that the department is building a central content hub following the "Disney business model.
"Some smiled at the idea of this model, but we believe it offers a very useful and practical way of operation which could be implemented here," he told the magazine.
Changes being made to the press office include boosting the number of staff and keeping the office open until 10 pm. Until Mgr Viganò took control, the office closed at 2pm.
